Tokyo, the night Kaori left  

After having left Falcon Ryo went for a walk in the streets of Shinjuku, but contrary to what he had said to his friend, he wasn’t courting the ladies. He was thinking.  

Late in the afternoon he went back to his apartment and went into the kitchen. On his way there he turned the television on and then began taking things out of the fridge for his evening meal.  

But just as he was about to begin to make his lunch, he heard the speaker on the seven o’clock news announce that the flight going to New-York had been victim of a hijacking. Leaving everything as it was, Ryo ran into the living room. The reporter was just speaking.  

“ Ladies and gentlemen. We have just received new that flight 753 with final destination New-York in the US had just been the victim of a group of air pirates. This group has not yet made any demands nor had it made itself known. The air controllers of the airspace in which the plane is at the moment have informed us that the plane has made a course correction and is now flying towards Central America. We remind you that a civil war has broken out several days ago in Columbia between the government and a group of guerrillas. We can not confirm if the two events are related in any way. We will keep you informed as the events unfold.”  

Ryo was petrified. Kaori… Dear God Kaori ! Why did you take that plane ? Why was I such a fool that I forced you to flee. Kaori…  

Giving himself a shake, he took the phone and called Saeko.  

“What is it Ryo ? This is really not the time.”  

“Kaori was on board of that plane.”  

“Oh no… I’m sorry Ryo but I really don’t know any more than what the media has announced. But I’ll inform you as soon as I have any news. I promise.”  

“Thanks Saeko.”  

“Ryo?”  

“Yeah?”  

“Don’t do anything stupid please. Kaori would never forgive you and neither would I”.  

“…”  

“Ryo?”  

“I promise. Thank you Saeko ».  

His dinner completely forgotten, Ryo settled himself into the sofa and waited. An hour later he heard footsteps in the hall. Falcon, Miko, Mick and Kazue came in. He looked at them but shook his head before they could ask anything. Mick and Falcon went to join Ryo while Miki and Kazue left for the kitchen. A few minutes later they came back with a thermos of coffee and some sandwiches, which Miki gave to Ryo. He took them and ate them without uttering a word. They waited.  

It was nearly midnight when the phone rang. It was Saeko. She had just received confirmation that the plane had landed in Columbia. She had also received information stating that the airfield where the plane had landed was in rebel hands. Meanwhile no demands had been made and no news concerning the passengers had been released.  

Ryo hung up.  

“The plane has landed in Columbia on an airfield in rebel hands.”  

Having said that Ryo had turned around and had begun to leave the room when Falcon called out to him.  

“Ryo. Where are you going?”  

“To get Kaori.”  

“She’s in Columbia and you’re mortally afraid of planes.”  

“I know. I also know what a guerrilla is Falcon. So do you.”  

“Hmm, hostages, negotiations and hundreds of deaths.”  

“But most of all, months and months of waiting before something is done.”  

“I’m coming with you. You’ll need my help.”  

“I’m coming too.”  

“So am I”.  

“Miki! Mick!”  

“No Falcon ! I know what I’ve said. I’ve also fought in a guerrilla war and I’m not about to leave Kaori in the middle of one.”  

“And I’m not going to stay behind.”  

“I refuse your help Mick”.  

“What? How can you say that Ryo? »  

“Falcon and Miki have both known the hell of a guerrilla war, you haven’t. If you were the pro I have known years ago, I would have welcomed you. But now you would no longer be able to keep up with us. I’m sorry Mick but I prefer not to take chances.”  

“You mean I’ll be in the way.”  

“Yes.”  

“I agree with Ryo on this one Mick. You wouldn’t survive.”  

“I concur.”  

“Besides, we need someone here. Knowing Kaori she would be able to come back here before we even get out of the jungle. I would like you to be here to reassure her.”  

“Alright, since it’s necessary. At least I can make myself useful and get in touch with my contacts.”  

“Thank you Mick.”  

“Ryo. Bring Kaori back. That’s all I ask.”  

Mick left with Kazue.  

“Ryo? How are you going to do this?”  

“We hire.”  

“What?”  

“You heard me Falcon. We hire ourselves all the mercenaries, ex-mercenaries and pros we know or can hire. Since Kaori is my partner she has met a lot of people and I know that if I ask them to help me get her back they will. I’m sure that you also know people in your contacts.”  

“And how are you going to pay them? They will perhaps help you but aren’t going to do it for free.”  

“I’ve some savings Kaori knew nothing about. I was keeping them for needful times. I think this is a needful time.”  

“Humpf.”  

“Miki. Can you take care of transportation and equipment while Falcon and I recruit? I think I can assemble about a dozen men and women. Falcon?”  

“About the same I think.”  

“Make preparation for a group of 25 people. That should be enough.”  

“You can count on me Ryo.”  

“Thank you my friends. Now let’s go. Time is flying by and Kaori is waiting for us.”
